The late Bishop Sials Silvanus Njiru of Meru
was born on 10 th October 1928 at Kevote in Embu and he was a priest on 17 th December 1955.In 1975 he was appointed as the Auxiliary Bishop of Meru by Pope
Paul VI. On 9 th December 1976 he was appointed as the Bishop of Meru. He was the first local Kenyan
to lead the diocese. From 1976 until his retirement on 18 th March 2004 he led the diocese of Meru with
great pastoral care.
In the early 1980s he not only invited the Salesians to his diocese but also donated his family property
which he inherited from his father to the Salesians of Don Bosco in perpetuity to set up Don Bosco
Embu.
From 2004 until his death on 28 th April 2020 at Rivoli due to corona complications the late Bishop was
residing in Italy with the Consolata Missionaries.
From time to time he used to visit Don Bosco Embu and used to spend few days in our community. No
words of appreciation and gratitude will suffice to the late bishop for his great generosity. May his soul
rest in peace and may he intercede for us before the Almighty God!
